What the Polidict Safari extension can do

The extension comes with the Polidict app for macOS and works right inside Safari. It can do everything the Chrome extension does, so you do not have to change your browser.

How to install and turn on the extension

  1. Download Polidict from the Mac App Store. It requires macOS Ventura 13 or later.

  2. Open the Polidict app. Its window shows whether the extension is on and what to do next.

  3. In Safari, open Safari → Settings → Extensions and turn on Polidict.

  4. Allow the extension to work on the websites where you want to use it.

  5. Sign in to your account at polidict.com in Safari — the extension picks up that sign-in.

Polidict on the App Store is one app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. You have the same account and the same vocabulary on every device.

How it works while you read

Say you are reading an English article in Safari and spot a word you want to remember.

  1. Select it, and a small Polidict button appears next to it.

  2. Click the button: a panel with the meaning, translation, and examples opens over the page.

  3. Pick a group if you need one, then click Add to vocabulary.

If the word is already in your vocabulary, Polidict shows your saved entry. The panel opens over the text, so you will not lose your place: close it and keep reading.

Another way is the context menu: right-click the selected word and choose Look up in Polidict.

Look up a word without selecting it

Sometimes the word is not on the page: you heard it in a podcast or it just came to mind. In that case, click the Polidict icon in the Safari toolbar and type the word into search.

The extension shows the definition, translation, and examples, and you can listen to the pronunciation right there. If there is no ready-made definition, Polidict suggests options with AI.

Polidict Plus on Mac

Looking up words, saving them, and training are free. If you need more words and groups or AI suggestions, click Upgrade in the extension in Safari. The Polidict app opens, and you can subscribe to Plus through the App Store. The subscription applies to your Polidict account, so it also works on the website and in the mobile app.

When other Polidict tools fit better

The Safari extension comes in handy when you are reading on your Mac and do not want to get distracted. For other situations, there is:

  • the website and the iPhone app — to edit your vocabulary and do full training sessions;

  • the Safari extension on iPhone — to save words while reading on your phone;

  • the Chrome extension — if you use Chrome or another Chromium-based browser;

  • Raycast — to quickly look up and add a word on a Mac without opening a browser.

Summary

  • The Polidict extension for Safari on Mac is now available on the Mac App Store.

  • Select a word on a page to see its meaning and translation, or look it up from the icon in the Safari toolbar.
