Polidict for Chrome: save words while you read

Polidict is now on the Chrome Web Store. Select a word on any page, check its meaning and translation, add it to a group, and review it later in training.

The Polidict extension for Chrome is now available on the Chrome Web Store. It lets you save words right while you read: select an unfamiliar word on a page, check its meaning and translation, add it to your Polidict vocabulary, and keep reading.

What the extension does

The Polidict Chrome extension is a short path from a word on a web page to a word in your vocabulary. No more copying it into another tab, looking up a definition, and then moving it into the app by hand.

ActionHow it works
Select a wordA Polidict button appears next to the selected text
Translate in contextThe meaning, translation, and examples open on top of the page
Look up a wordSearch from the extension's toolbar popup without opening the site
Save to vocabularyThe word, definition, examples, and image go to your account
Stay organizedAdd new words to one or more groups right away
ListenPlay the pronunciation directly in the extension

Words saved through the extension show up on the Polidict website and in the mobile app. From there, they join your regular spaced repetition training.

Getting started

  1. Open the Polidict page on the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome.

  2. Pin the Polidict icon to the toolbar so it is always within reach.

  3. Sign in to your account at polidict.com. The extension uses the same sign-in.

  4. Select a word on any page and click the Polidict button next to it.

You need a Polidict account to save words. Because the extension is installed from the Chrome Web Store, it usually works in other Chromium-based browsers too.

Select a word and see its meaning

The most common flow looks like this: you are reading an article, a news story, or documentation and come across a word you want to remember. Select it, and a small Polidict button appears next to it.

Click the button, and a panel with the meaning, translation, and examples opens over the page. If the word is already in your vocabulary, Polidict shows your saved entry. If not, you can add it with a single click on Add to vocabulary.

Where the button does not appear. Some sites do not let extensions work with their pages, so selecting a word there does not open Polidict. Examples include the Chrome Web Store itself, Chrome's internal pages, and polidict.com. On those pages, use search from the Polidict icon in the Chrome toolbar instead.

Look up words without selecting them

Sometimes the word is not on the page: you heard it in a podcast or it came to mind while working. Click the Polidict icon in the Chrome toolbar and type the word into search.

The extension shows the definition, translation, and examples, and lets you listen to the pronunciation. When there is no ready-made definition, Polidict can suggest options with AI.

Choose groups as you save

If you are collecting vocabulary for a topic, an exam, or a project, you can add the word to the right group straight away. The group list opens above the save button, and search helps you find the one you need.

That way new words do not end up in one long pile. Later, you can start training for just that group on the website or in the app.

How the extension fits with the rest of Polidict

The Chrome extension does not replace the website or the mobile app. It covers the moment when you are already reading in the browser and do not want to lose context:

  • the extension — to notice and save a word while reading;

  • the website and the iPhone app — to edit your vocabulary and do full training sessions;

  • the Safari extension on iPhone — to do the same while reading on your phone;

  • Raycast — to quickly look up and add words on a Mac.

Summary

  • The Polidict extension for Chrome is available on the Chrome Web Store.

  • Select a word on a page to see its meaning and translation, or look it up from the toolbar icon.

  • Saved words go straight into your Polidict vocabulary, groups, and training.
