Polidict in Safari on iPhone: save words from any page

Polidict for iPhone now includes a Safari extension. Select words while you read, check their meaning and translation, and save them without switching apps.

Polidict 1.1.0 for iPhone and iPad adds a Safari extension. Now a word you come across while reading on your phone can be translated and saved right on the page: select it, tap the Polidict button, and add it to your vocabulary.

What the Polidict Safari extension is

The Polidict Safari extension is part of the Polidict iOS app that runs inside the Safari browser. There is nothing extra to download: the extension ships with the app, so you only need to update to version 1.1.0 and turn it on in Settings.

The extension helps when you read news, articles, or blogs on your phone:

  • select a word — a Polidict button appears next to it;

  • tap the button — a panel with the meaning, translation, and examples slides up from the bottom;

  • listen to the pronunciation — right in the panel;

  • save the word — to your vocabulary and, if you like, straight into a group.

Saved words appear in the app and on the website, and later come back in spaced repetition training.

How to turn on the extension

  1. Update Polidict on the App Store to version 1.1.0 or later.

  2. Open the Polidict app and make sure you are signed in.

  3. Go to Settings → Safari → Extensions and turn on Polidict. On iOS 18 and later, Safari is under Settings → Apps → Safari.

  4. Allow the extension to access the websites where you want to use it.

You can also manage extensions from Safari itself: open the page menu in the address bar and choose to manage extensions.

You do not need to sign in to the extension separately. If you are signed in to the Polidict app, the extension uses the same account.

What it looks like while reading

Say you are reading an article in Safari and see an unfamiliar word.

  1. Press and hold the word to select it.

  2. Tap the Polidict button that appears next to the selection.

  3. Check the meaning, translation, and examples in the panel at the bottom.

  4. Pick a group if you need one and tap Add to vocabulary.

The panel opens over the page, so you do not lose your place in the text. Close it and keep reading from the same line.

The extension or the Share menu

Version 1.1.0 also adds saving words and links through the standard Share menu. Both are useful, but in different situations:
